Humber Woodland of Remembrance

Humber Woodland of Remembrance

Humber Woodland of Remembrance stands as the first green burial ground in Herefordshire, harmonizing the beauty of nature with the sensitive need for a peaceful resting place. This woodland site, thoughtfully managed by Diane Thomas and her daughter Lizzie, is nestled amidst the picturesque Herefordshire countryside, offering a tranquil space for those seeking an environmentally conscious farewell.

Since its inception, Humber Woodland has dedicated itself to providing a serene environment where loved ones can rest among native wildflowers and trees. Unlike traditional cemeteries, the burials here are marked by the growth of natural flora, respecting both the environment and the wishes of families. This approach fosters a sense of continuity as the woodland thrives, inhabited by local wildlife such as rabbits, butterflies, and various bird species.

Understanding the significance of landscape management, the team at Humber Woodland strives to maintain a healthy balance between wildness and care. The ongoing care of the woodland ensures it remains a nurturing habitat, where new and old trees flourish in a natural rhythm. As families choose specific spots for their loved ones, the woodland develops organically, emphasizing the connection between mortality and nature.

Families are encouraged to contribute to the landscape by planting native wildflowers on their loved one’s grave. This practice not only enriches the burial site but also enhances the overall biodiversity of the area. Humber Woodland provides guidance on suitable flora, helping families to select plants that will thrive in the local ecosystem. The staff is always available to assist with any questions or concerns regarding burial procedures or the environment.

Humber Woodland of Remembrance is conveniently located just four miles from Leominster and twelve miles from Hereford, making it accessible for visitors in the surrounding areas. The site is open from 9 AM to 7 PM during the warmer months of April to August and welcomes visitors outside of these hours by allowing parking at the entrance. To ensure a pleasant visit, sturdy footwear is recommended due to the varying terrain of the field.

Distinct from ordinary burial grounds, this site encourages a personal touch, allowing families to create simple and meaningful memorials for their loved ones. Engraved stones and small markers are permissible, providing a personalized tribute amidst the surrounding trees and flowers. This method promotes environmental sustainability while preserving the memory of those who have passed.

As part of their mission, Humber Woodland also hosts community events such as planting days and workshops, fostering a sense of connection among families who have chosen this unique burial option. With their ongoing commitment to sustainability and community engagement, Humber Woodland of Remembrance provides not just a resting place but also a living legacy of growth and remembrance.

Being a member of the Association of Natural Burial Grounds, Humber Woodland adheres to regulations that ensure an ethical approach to natural burial practices. Their dedication to creating a comforting and respectful environment encourages families to reflect on life and nature, celebrating the memories of loved ones in a serene and beautiful setting.
