Northumberland Woodland Burial & Crematorium

Northumberland Woodland Burial & Crematorium

Northumberland Woodland Burial & Crematorium has a rich history dating back to its founding in 2002 by Steve Clarehugh. Originally named Northumbrian Woodland Burials, the facility is currently managed by his son Scott and his wife Laura Clarehugh. Over the past two decades, they have dedicated themselves to helping families navigate the challenging times associated with loss, offering a compassionate and comforting environment in which to honour loved ones.

Northumberland Woodland Burial

Located in the picturesque Bockenfield Wood, Felton, Morpeth, Northumberland, the site encompasses an expanse of 38 acres featuring mature woodlands and wildflower meadows. This beautiful natural setting is ideal for peaceful walks and provides a serene atmosphere, allowing visitors to find solace amongst the trees and flowers. The site emphasises the importance of nature, integrating it into the memorial experience and encouraging family and friends to engage with the landscape.

In 2018, the Clarehugh family expanded their vision with the development of Northumberland Crematorium. After considerable planning and dedication, they managed to create a facility that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding environment, ensuring minimal impact on the local ecology. The crematorium operates a maximum of five cremation services a day, allowing families to proceed through their rituals without feeling rushed, thus providing the necessary space for reflection and remembrance.

Northumberland Crematorium is more than just a place for cremation; it serves as a community hub. Outside of service hours, it opens its doors for local groups and organisations, fostering a sense of community spirit. The team at Northumberland Woodland Burial & Crematorium organises seasonal memorial services and workshops, such as wreath-making and the creation of natural memorials. These events are designed to support grieving families while also extending their care to the broader rural community.

The dedicated team of ten staff members has extensive experience in the bereavement sector, possessing a wealth of knowledge from their backgrounds as funeral directors. This expertise allows them to provide guidance and assistance throughout the difficult process of planning a burial or cremation, ensuring that families feel supported every step of the way.

The site is open for visitation during daylight hours, welcoming families and friends to explore the tranquil surroundings. Visitors are encouraged to take their time, reflect, and even bring along a flask of tea to enjoy while observing the beauty of nature. Northumberland Woodland Burial & Crematorium promotes a holistic approach to remembrance, viewing their space not merely as a final resting place, but as a nurturing environment for those left behind.

Dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of the area, their goal is to remain a peaceful refuge for reflection. Located just off the A1, their accessibility is enhanced by clear signage guiding visitors from all directions. The commitment to creating a sustainable and respectful haven for families, combined with a genuine approach to care, makes Northumberland Woodland Burial & Crematorium a remarkable sanctuary in times of need.
